The school holidays are fast approaching and Res.Awesome is here to help!

We understand during this time many parents will be frantically trying to compile a list of fun, budget-friendly activities to keep the kiddies entertained. With the weather beginning to look decidedly more Wintery, having a handy list of indoor projects is imperative to ensure everyone is happy!

The team at Res.Awesome believe it is never too early to start thinking about the role we play in our natural world; whether that be thinking about where our food comes from or taking a hand in reducing, reusing, recycling and rethinking our waste stream responsibly. It is important to teach our kids how to work as a team, whether that be with your family at home or out in the big wide world.

Get creative with reusability and see what amazing ideas your kids come up with when it comes to fashioning new toys, games or art. Set up a crafternoon with some regular recyclable household items. Grab bottle tops, cardboard boxes/cylinders, egg cartons, plastic bottles and watch your kids unleash their creativity.

For most crafty projects all you will need is some glue, paint, string, access to the kitchen and some colouring-in tools. The rest is up to you and what your kids find when having a rummage through the recycling. Wind chimes, bird feeders, games and beautiful pieces of art are all things your kids will really enjoy putting their minds to.

One of the best things about hanging out with our tamariki is we get to see the world through their eyes. Imagination often runs wild and perhaps that is just what we need when rethinking our waste stream. Check out this awesome page and this one too, for some inspiration; you may be really surprised with what your kids come up with!

We would love to see the Ōtepoti community encouraging our tamariki to engage with their waste; measuring, weighing and using visual cues to figure out just how much waste we are all contributing to our landfills. Get stuck into the nitty-gritty of managing our waste and teaching our kids about the part we all individually play when it comes to taking care of our planet, by checking out the DIY Easy Waste Audit - For Kids! This is a special version of our Home Waste Audit guide which is tailored to suit your children’s needs.

Investigating our bins helps us create a culture of behaviour change if we work together to identify areas we can shift together.

It will be intriguing to see your results, look out for your top contenders, what waste item do you make the most of? Is this a place you can start making a change? What alternatives are there?

We usually find that plastic is a large portion of our waste and we love using alternatives in the kitchen; we like plates, bowls & beeswax wraps. One of our favourite holiday activities is to get the team together and make DIY beeswax wraps. Head to our online store and grab yourselves a DIY beeswax wrap kit; this is an activity that can be enjoyed with your tamariki.

These activities will deliver amazing results; sharing quality time together as a family and doing your bit to look out for mother nature. Win win!

We are so keen to see your waste audit pictures, do share them with us by tagging @resawesome #TeamResAwesome on social media or sending your story to us via email to info@resawesome.nz
