As all of our Res.Awesome followers will have gathered by now…. Plastic is terrible for the environment and we are straight up not a fan! Most plastic has a very short lifespan, especially the stuff we use to wrap up and preserve our food. Around 32% of the plastic we use in Aotearoa ends up in our natural environment; damaging and polluting Papatūānuku. The realities of our plastic problem are pretty saddening and we have dedicated a whole blog to the perils of our plastic industry - you can read it here.

We are not here to harp on about the damage plastic does to our marine life, land and iwi… we are here to share with you a positive and hopeful solution to some of our plastic kitchen waste; Beeswax wraps! Each beeswax wrap has the potential to save 75 or more metres of plastic wrap from entering our landfills (or worse…..our oceans), every year. While being great for the environment, Beeswax wraps are also good for your pocket. For those avid D.I.Yer’s who love keeping their hands busy, we would like to share a method of creating your own beeswax wraps that can be used to ensure we are keeping on top of our food waste. Read an informative and comprehensive ‘How To Guide’ here.

Alternatively, support your local business (us!) and purchase a handy DIY Beeswax Wrap Kit from our online store. It includes awesome instructions, two pieces of repurposed cotton fabric and a beautiful beeswax block. The beeswax bar is 100gsm of local Otago Beeswax, Jojoba oil and a food-grade resin. It will make up to 5 large or 10 small - medium wraps. This is a fun activity to do with your whānau to reduce plastic in your home! Our Beeswax Wrap Kits are currently on sale too, so be sure to grab one…. or a few!

We also want to pay homage to the humble Bee and their amazing daily activities keeping our food production fertile and pollinated. We wouldn’t be able to create this product without their industries ways. We encourage you to plant a Bee friendly garden where ever you can.

City scapes and rural berms are prime spots for creating more spaces for Bee’s, what a different city that would be to live in!

The Res.Awesome team are really passionate about saving our planet from unnecessary plastic waste. We are committed to providing our community with practical, sustainable solutions. A big thank you in advance to all of our customers! We know you’re on this journey with us and giving it your best shot, every day, as we are, together!
